If you go to Marks & Spencer's in Bournemouth and buy your lunch then when you get to the till you will be asked "do you have a carrier bag?" If you say no then they will offer you one...for 5p (or 10p if you want one of their "bags for life").Now I approve of the sentiment behind this initiative 100%, so why do I feel I'm being ripped off? Maybe the smug look on the member of staff serving me needs work on?

There is so much plastic - as a direct result of supermarket carrier bags - in landfills that experts thinks it's already "too late". The same experts believe that only way we could've lessened the impact of plastic bags was to have stopped using them in 1969.
The US is way behind the curve of Europe w/regards to this stuff - naturally. However, we've noticed that in the past few months, supermarkets and grocery stores have started offering "lifetime" bags, some for as little as 99 cents. The trick for us is to now have enough of them to pack a "big shop" _and_ remember to carry the things with us when we go out!
